Housing Choice Vouchers


Housing Choice Vouchers make private-market housing affordable for low-income families and individuals. The Missoula Housing Authority administers Housing Choice Vouchers—commonly called Section 8 after the section of the United States Housing Act of 1937 that authorizes them—and forms a partnership with participants and landlords to provide housing opportunities throughout the city of Missoula and a 10-mile radius outside the city limits. Through the Housing Choice Voucher program, 774 families have secured quality housing in neighborhoods of their choice in Missoula.

In the Housing Choice Voucher program, the Missoula Housing Authority pays a fixed amount toward the rent, based on the tenant’s income and MHA’s approved payment standards. Initially, the tenant must pay at least 30%, but no more than 40% of their monthly income for rent and utilities. Participants can use a voucher to rent units from landlords willing to participate in the Housing Choice Voucher program.

To be eligible, your household income must be at or below 50% of the area median income. People eligible for vouchers are chosen from a waiting list. Click here to apply.

Special Programs with Housing Choice Voucher (HCV):


Family Self Sufficiency (FSS)


Families on the voucher program who want to begin working or increase their earned income can take advantage of the FSS program, which rewards increased earned income.

Homeownership Vouchers


Families who have participated in the voucher program for at least a year and have full-time work or receive disability can apply to use their voucher assistance in purchasing a home. Download our Homeownership Handbook.

Project-Based


These vouchers are assigned to specific addresses. If a tenant chooses to move, the assistance remains at that specific address. After a year, tenants wishing to move may be eligible for a Housing Choice Voucher. Project-Based Voucher waiting lists are specific to the properties where the vouchers are assigned.
